(This is the page for the dragon species. Y'all may exist looking for the linguistic communication, or Dragon, the true cat owned by Undauntable, instead.)

Dragons are currently the dominant species of both Pyrrhia and Pantala. Scavengers once ruled Pyrrhia, but dragons overthrew them in an consequence known as the Scorching.

Dragons are intelligent, every bit they are capable of speaking both the dragon and human[i] linguistic communication, making tools, literacy, and circuitous thought. Animus dragons, those with the magical power to do almost anything, be, though they are exceedingly uncommon.[2] Dragons with special powers aberrant for their species, such as flamesilk or firescales, also exist in sparse numbers. Most dragons have tribe-typical powers.

Dragons have lengthy natural lifespans, though they tin can exist killed by injury,[3] illness,[4] and poisonous substance,[5] among other causes. The average dragon lifespan is roughly 1 hundred fifty years,[event one] though the oldest a dragon has been known to live without magic before his death is 1-hundred-ten years.[six] Dragonets stop growing rapidly at seven years old, and this is considered adulthood or maturity in near tribes.[7] Tui herself considers dragons from 4 to seven years old teenagers, with seven existence approximately xiv through 16 in human being years.[event 2]

Biology and Anatomy

In that location are seven known Pyrrhian tribes: RainWings, SandWings, SeaWings, NightWings, SkyWings, MudWings, and IceWings. Hybrids between these tribes are possible merely uncommon.

All tribes are roughly the same size except for MudWings, who are mostly larger and stronger than dragons from the other tribes.[eight] SkyWings accept a larger wingspan than about tribes.[9] Dragons have been confirmed to continuously grow as they historic period, as shown with Grandeur, Morrowseer, and Darkstalker, with the oldest dragons typically being the largest. Dragons grow rapidly for the get-go eight to 10 years of their life, and so grow at a much slower rate for the rest of their lives.[upshot 3] Dragonets molt their scales upon growth, at to the lowest degree so in the case of SkyWings.[10] Dragons also do non have sexual dimorphism.[consequence four]

There are three known Pantalan tribes: SilkWings, LeafWings, and HiveWings. The BeetleWings were the ancestors of the HiveWings and SilkWings, simply are now extinct.

All dragons are primarily quadrupedal. All Pyrrhian dragons possess half-dozen limbs, every bit practise LeafWings — these consist of two wings and iv legs. HiveWings and SilkWings have eight limbs, consisting of four wings and 4 legs. Wings are fastened to a dragon'due south shoulders and take a slightly transparent wing membrane stretched between v small bone digits, each of which has i small-scale claw on the tip. A larger claw is attached to the front end of the 3rd digit. Dragons have overlapping scales that vary in colour and shape from tribe to tribe. Dragons require their tails for flight, and severe tail injuries may ground a dragon for life.[11]

Pyrrhian dragons have a vulnerable spot at the tip of their tail.[12](it is non known if Pantalan dragons possess this). Their bones are hard to break — nearly as hard every bit diamonds[thirteen] — though they can exist dislocated.[xiv]

Dragons typically have big claws at the base of operations of each pes, with five on the forelegs and 5 on the hind legs, though polydactylism may occur. All dragons can fly, although SilkWings are hatched without wings and cannot fly until six years of age when their wings abound after their metamorphosis, equally were BeetleWings. Some tin can also hatch with freckles on their bodies, ordinarily at various amounts.

Dragons can faint,[15] sweat,[xvi] and cry.[17] Dragons are able to have allergies[18] and become intoxicated.[19] They tin also have seizures[twenty] and hiccups,[21] as well as medical weather such as deformities, tumors, or mental illnesses. Most dragon tribes hate getting wet,[xiii] with the exception of SeaWings and sometimes IceWings.[22]

It is mentioned on several occasions that dragons have a hoarding instinct, preferring shiny or brightly colored objects. Instead of a currency system, dragons on Pyrrhia typically barter; gold, gems, and other treasure are used in this system.[23] Pantalan dragons use a currency chosen scales.[24]

Dragons reproduce via eggs, usually laid in clutches of two or more.[25] Eggs may comprise twin dragonets.[26] Dragonets tin can speak within a 24-hour interval of hatching,[27] and a 1-twelvemonth-old dragonet is capable of speaking in total, if broken, sentences, as well equally flying.[28] Dragons tin have birthmarks. In a SeaWing's case, they tin have Aquatic birthmarks.[29]

Hybrids

Hybrids are dragons with parents from dissimilar tribes. A dragon whose parent or parents are hybrids may likewise be considered a hybrid.[citation needed] These dragons have mixtures of features from their parent tribes; many of them look unique among other dragons, while some tin can blend in with one of their parent tribes. Hybrids get their dominant genes (the genes which brand a hybrid expect more like a separate tribe) from their female parent.[30] Burn may have had several stuffed hybrids in her collection.

Diets

Dragons are more often than not omnivores, though many accept primarily cannibal diets. SilkWings are herbivores that subside mainly on fruit. RainWings are primarily vegetarian, just tin eat meat if they choose so.[31] Dragons of not-vegetarian or non-herbivorous tribes may choose to be vegetarian.[32] Most dragons can survive for up to a month without food.[33]

Dragons sometimes potable milk.[34]

Specialization

Each tribe has specialized structures and abilities that differentiate them from the other tribes. Most typical is some sort of exhalation, nearly commonly burn down. SkyWings, NightWings, and SandWings can breathe fire at any given time, whereas MudWings tin can only breathe fire when warm enough. IceWings exhale a freezing jiff — though oestrus can temporarily thwart this power[35] — while RainWings can spit corrosive acid that simply affects biological matter and can impale a dragon in seconds. SeaWings are the only tribe on Pyrrhia that cannot exhale anything that may be used every bit a weapon, and none of the tribes on Pantala can, bated from the occasional acid or poison-spitting HiveWing. The most commonly modified structures in dragons are the wings, claws, or tail. Dragon fire smells different from normal fire.[36] Average dragons are physically strong enough to rip a tree from the ground and throw it beyond a brusk distance.[37]

Gild

Dragons accept a matriarchal gild where each tribe is ruled by a hereditary queen. Each tribe differs in its traditions and values of life due to habitat and physiology. They are advanced enough to have oral communication and writing — all dragons speak the same language. The SeaWings use their bioluminescent stripes to communicate in a dissever language called Aquatic for communication underwater. All Pyrrhian tribes live in divide kingdoms except the RainWings and the NightWings, who both inhabit the Rainforest Kingdom. However, Pantalan tribes do non live in dissever kingdoms similar Pyrrhian tribes. Instead, HiveWings control near of the continent and rule over the SilkWing tribe, while the LeafWings alive in the Poison Jungle, which is independent from HiveWing control.

Most dragons experience tribal loyalty, most notably NightWings, HiveWings, SkyWings, IceWings, and SeaWings. They seem to view their tribe as extremely important to their identity, and consider acting confronting others of their tribe or their tribal queen to be traitorous. Almost NightWings, IceWings, and HiveWings and some SkyWings have feelings of superiority about their tribe. Each dragon tribe also has their own religious beliefs.[event 5] All dragons dearest treasure.[38]

In formal settings, information technology is common for dragons to use their tribe to introduce themselves and others, almost similar a title, i.eastward. "Prince Arctic of the IceWings."[39]

Body Linguistic communication

It is stated in the books multiple times that dragons have a system of body language. Dragons from the aforementioned tribe will oft make casual physical gestures to one another. For example, Nautilus touched Turtle's wing with his own despite them having no relationship.[twoscore] Dragons may also have a sort of "code" for greeting 1 another, featuring mid-air flips and thumping wings.[41] Dragons may raise their wings in a shushing gesture,[42] and they spread or wave their wings to catch attending.[43] Flicking i's tail at someone is some other mode to get their attention[44] and can also be used to indicate something of interest.[45] If a dragon lashes their tail, information technology is a sign of anger or impatience.[46] SeaWings may flare their gills when angry,[47] and RainWings flare and color their ruffs when aroused or indignant.[48] [49] Dragons too employ their claws to indicate numbers.[fifty]

Nudging or brushing some other dragon'south wing or twining tails together is a sign of amore and closeness;[51] dragons may notice if others are close enough to testify affection this way.[52] Wrapping wings effectually one another, hugging, and pressing snouts together are also signs of affection.[53] [54] Dragons tent their wings over others as a way to condolement or embrace them in a protective gesture.[55] [56] Dragons likewise kiss as a way to express affection.[57]

Technology

Dragons have armor[58] and handheld weapons;[59] technologically and socially, they seem to exist somewhere around the Middle Ages.

NightWings are the most technologically avant-garde Pyrrhian tribe, seeming to put great emphasis on research and written report — this attitude was especially prominent during the war, when the tribe needed it to survive. NightWings studied geology, metalworking, biological science, chemistry, and genetics.[60]

SeaWings employ a waterfall prison that tin be turned on and off with a switch.[61] This prison house arrangement features electrical eels strong enough to kill a full-grown dragon.[62]

Dragons know medicinal uses of herbs and blood vessels.[63] RainWings, in particular, know about poisonous frogs, and utilize certain venom from them to create blow darts.[64] SkyWings use dragonflame cactus bombs that explode when ignited, spraying sharp seed pods.[65]

Dragons on Pantala seem to be slightly more technologically advanced than dragons on Pyrrhia. They use books instead of scrolls,[66] apply eyeglasses,[24] brand chocolate and work with sugar,[67] grow plants in terrariums,[68] run stores,[69] and create massive silk bridges betwixt the Hives.[70] Sundew shows an impressive noesis of plants and insects, like to RainWings. There are too water towers in Pantala,[71] used by SilkWings and HiveWings living in the Hives; the beingness of plumbing is suggested in The Hive Queen when a sink is used.[72]

The HiveWing wrist cuffs can seemingly inject poisonous substance into a SilkWing when activated remotely.[73]

The LeafWings, especially the PoisonWings, accept also shown skill in keeping away dangerous plants and animals, equally seen in the construction of the PoisonWing village.

History

Before the dragons had queens, scavengers ruled Pyrrhia. Eventually, the dragons rebelled, establishing tribes and queens; this was known to the dragons as the Scorching.[74]

The simply known war to accept identify on Pantala was the Tree Wars, which took place fifty years earlier the events of The Lost Continent. The war was caused past Queen Wasp, who convinced the SilkWings to submit nether her dominion by telling them the Book of Clearsight said it must be so. The LeafWings, notwithstanding, demanded to see the book, which Queen Wasp would not allow considering it would expose her program. The LeafWings were nearly wiped out in the following war and proclaimed by the HiveWings to be extinct. All the trees in the HiveWing-controlled areas were cut downwardly to prevent the LeafWings from coming back. HiveWings afterwards lied most the state of war, claiming that LeafWings had tried to wipe the HiveWings and SilkWings out.

Although at that place are many wars in Pyrrhia'due south history, such every bit the wars betwixt the NightWings and the IceWings, the most notable war was the State of war of SandWing Succession. This was caused by Queen Oasis of the SandWings beingness killed by a scavenger, followed by her daughters Blaze, Blister, and Fire trying to claim the throne for themselves. This sparked a tribal war among the dragon tribes since each of the princesses formed alliances with the other tribes to defeat their sisters.

Afterward the state of war was ended by the dragonets of destiny, the tribes were at an uneasy peace, though hostilities and tensions are still high, every bit many dragons are still bearing grudges against certain tribes. Subsequently Darkstalker was released from his eternal slumber, he provoked a war between the NightWings and IceWings, almost leading to the downfall of Pyrrhia. Still, Darkstalker was stopped by the dragonets in the Jade Winglet, who transformed him into a young NightWing-RainWing hybrid named Peacemaker.

Trivia

  • Tui supports dragons having unique colors amidst their tribes.[event 6]
    • Additionally, Tui approves the graphic novel pages, thus making odd-colored dragons official.[result 7]
  • Pets do non do well in dragon communities, as they often get eaten past forgetful relatives or even by its owner.[75]
  • Dragons can be LGBT+.[event 8]
  • The dragon tribes are intentionally non written with accents or details based on real-world human culture.[consequence 9] Nevertheless, the audiobooks depict some tribes with sure accents.
